East African art on rise by Josie Blossfeld

Summary: A Kenyan artist, Boniface Maina, is present at the first commercial auction of East African art Tuesday. The auction is going on in Narobi, Kenya's capital. The auction includes 47 different pieces from the past three or four decades, which will have a cost ranging from a few hundred to almost $30,000 euros. The goal is to get more people to appreciate and become interested in art in primarily Kenya, but also Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Sudan (who are represented in the auction as well).

Analysis: This is a great idea that will bring awareness to art in South America, and the exhibit also looks amazing! I wish I had been there to see it, and I hope they continue to have auctions like this in Kenya. It is good that their middle class is turning to art as an investment, as the industry can make a lot of money if you pull enough of the people's interest into the art work and artists, and showing the pieces they buy off in their homes.
