Norwegians Try to Reduce How Much Food They're Wasting - by Frances

A recent survey in Norway by the Østfold Research Food Waste Prevention showed that even though they had made improvements since 2010, Norwegians still waste around 255,000 tons of food each year, including the waste from stores, shops, farms, households and kitchens. The country's goal is to reduce this amount by 25% by 2015. More people are becoming aware of this issue, so that the supermarket chain Tesco has ended its "2 for 1" offers, and another chain, Rema, is considering doing the same thing, because they lead people to buy more than they can eat. Another supermarket, NorgesGruppen has started collecting food that is still edible but approaching their expiration dates, so consumers don't buy them.

Even though this is a serious issue, I like how the article was positive, and that its main idea was how people are trying to fix this waste problem instead of how bad the problem is, because it gives other countries dealing with the same thing some hope and some ideas to try. I know that the States has a huge problem of wasting food, and I think they need to start doing something more about it. Daily that are so many offers where you can buy larger quantities for a lower price, but you end up buying too much food, and then it goes off and you have to throw it away. Meanwhile, there are people starving in other parts of the world that could have been using that food if it hadn't been so mass-marketed. Also, whenever you go to restaurants, portion sizes are out of control, and even if you take the food to go, you may not want leftovers later. This country is infamous for the amount of waste it emits, but this article is relevant because it shows how another country countered this problem and was able to be successful.

  2. Its not just in these two countries either. So many parts of the world are almost gluttonous it seems with food. I think that the countries should work together to shrink food waste.
