Hurricane Isaac Reveals 1923 Shipwreck-Kennedi Mayes

The Rachel. Found at a private beach in Fort Morgan, Alabama.

Hurricane Isaac uncovered the remains of a small 1923 boat named the Rachel. Manned by a crew of eight men, she was run ashore October 17, 1923 during a tropical storm. All of the men survived, but not all crews of ships like the Rachel could say the same. A lot of ships that carried goods, called schooners which is what the Rachel is, were destroyed in a tropical storm similar to Isaac. The Rachel's crew had run her so far up-shore; they couldn't do anything with her. They tried, without success, to sell her and in the end; she was burned for unknown reasons. She was buried in the sand by the tides changing and slowly began to make a reappearance around 1969. With every hurricane, a small bit of her was exposed until she became as uncovered as she is now. Tourists are coming in to view her in her most exposed state because no one knows when she will succumb to her final resting place once again. This is a really amazing thing to find on the beach one day. For the Rachel to be so old and in such good condition after being burned, I want to go see as well. I don’t blame the tourists for going to get a good peak at her themselves because viewing this piece of American history resurfacing in such a good condition truly may be a once in a life experience.
