The Great (Sugar ) Burning- Amanda Maceda

Earlier today in Brazil, the port of Santos was ablaze for six hours. People at the scene at the time say a conveyor belt taking sugar into a warehouse caused the fire. Six warehouses were damaged and 180,000 tons of sugar from the Copersucar Company was burnt. “Brazil is the world’s main sugar exporter, accounting for nearly half of international sales.” New York raised sugar prices by 6 percent, but then shot it back down once they learned that the sugar business was not very affected by it. This is apparently the biggest fire in this ports history and the cause for the conveyor belt lighting on fire is unknown.
After rereading this a few times, I began to think to myself about the cause the fire itself. The conveyor belt may have just overheated, or maybe someone lit it ablaze. Even though a lot of sugar was destroyed, I’m happy that not all the sugar in the country was, especially since that country is our main exporter of it. With the prices of chocolate going up, the last thing we need is another food source to become scarce. Moreover, with Halloween coming up, the candy companies could outrageously raise their prices, blaming the sugar and the chocolate shortage.
