The Washington Monument is a 555-foot marble obelisk that was built to honor George Washington. It will stay closed to visitors until 2019. The monument has had several issues over the last few years. In 2011, an earthquake damaged and cracked the monument and now it needs repairs to its elevator system. David Rubenstein, a business man in philanthropist, has come to the rescue! Once again, he is donating money (2-3 million dollars) to renovate the elevators. In the past, Rubenstein also donated 7.5 million dollars to repair the monuments earthquake damage. He must be a big supporter of national parks and monuments because he also donated 18.5 million dollars towards the Lincoln Memorial and 5.37 million dollars for the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.
These monuments are important to help us remember our history. It is nice to know that private citizens like Rubenstein help to preserve it for everyone to see and experience.
