Aboriginal Children taken to Better Homes- Margaret Canady

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles of Australia says, in certain child abuse cases, he will take Aboriginal children away from their families and place them in adopted homes. Many Australian governments have been wary to intervene with Aboriginal families, scared of being accused of creating a new Stolen Generation.

The Stolen Generation was the process of the Australian government taking Aboriginal children away from their families and placing them in white homes to encourage assimilation. Giles, who is in fact the first indigenous state or territory leader in Australia, says there will not be a mass grab of children, but instead the consideration will rely on a case-by-case basis.

In the past decade, only one Aboriginal child has been adopted, highlighting the government's fears. Giles is hoping to protect children in abusive situations. In an exclusive interview, he says, "We've got all these alleged cases of chronic child sexual abuse, children running around on petrol, going on the streets at night sexualizing themselves in some circumstances, and there's only one permanent adoption, for fear of Stolen Generation? That is not standing up for kids."

I believe Giles has the best intentions in mind. The Stolen Generation was not trying to help the kids and promoted assimilation. Giles will look at each case and decide if the child is in danger. This needs to be done for any child, regardless of race. I believe the Australian public supports Giles since he is Aboriginal; the public might have a different view if this was coming from a white leader.

  1. It is unfair that it's based off of if they're Aboriginal or not
