Malaysian Woman Re-Elected to Parliament Despite Her Parties Failure by Corran Nolan

Nurul Izzah Anwar, who's opposition coalition failed to win this months national election, was again re-elected to her seat in Malaysia's Parliament. She got into politics at the age of 19 after her father had been jailed for corruption charges. She believed he was innocent and started to work on getting him out. He now leads a coalition of 3 opposition groups, and she has a stable political career. She is warm, friendly, and a pious Muslim, but when asked whether or not she wants to be Prime Minister, she says that "I am already a member of Parliament. If you were a teacher, would you want to become a headmaster?"
This article shows that the world's and particularly the Islamic view of women is changing, because before a women could not have even run for Parliament, but now Nurul has a promising career in politics. It also shows how social reform brought about change in the mind of younger generations, who are more open to new ideas.
