Many workers have found every single body, twenty-eight to be exact, in an underground mining place in Indonesia. The bodies were found dead due to a collapsed tunnel. Around ten more people were saved in the accident. The accident happened on May 14 around 500 meters away from the beginning of the mining tunnel facility named Big Gossan Mine. The miners in this tunnel mine for silver, copper, and gold.
All mining in this tunnel has stopped, and a company named PT Freeport has made it public that the mining facility will not return to its normal daily activities until further investigation happens to find out how the collapse happened. The president of Freeport, Richard Adkerson said "With the recovery work completed we are now focusing on reviewing safety throughout our underground operations and in determining what caused the collapse. We will take all actions required to provide for the safety of our work force."
He says that their company has always been number one on their list of priorities, and it will always be number one. Apparently, the goal of the workforce it to greatly decrease the amount of accidents that happen. They would also, of course, really like to decrease the amount of deaths that happen, but all accidents are unintentional, so they can not really control that aspect. He says "Facilities are unacceptable for our company."
As of right now, their company is trying to create an investigation group to determine the cause of the accident as well as what can be done to prevent further accidents. In the group, they are hoping to have experts from all over the world as well as experts from Indonesia that know about mining and geotechnical science. Adkerson quotes "We will be transparent in the investigation and its findings and cooperating with the authorities from the Government of Indonesia."
Analysis: The authors of this article were the CNN staff. I believe that this article was written to inform us of what has happened in Indonesia and how it has affected them greatly. It also affects everyone around the world because it is a huge caution to be very careful and safe. Also, if you are wanting to be in the mining business, risks will have to be taken. This article is written for mostly adults that will understand the subject and the damage it has caused. The main idea is that 28 bodies were found in the tunnel, and 10 were rescued. The accident took place in east Papua. Investigations will take place. Their is no sense of bias because it is all facts.
I think this accident is just awful. I would hate to have a family member or friend that suffered in this accident just because they were doing their job. I really would like to know the cause of this accident because it could help us prevent things like this in the future. Although, accidents always happen, and we can't control when they decide to take place.
