Australia Stops Exporting Cattle to Egypt Due to Animal Cruelty By: Nina Bharadwaj

Australia has stopped the export of cattle to Egypt. This is due to videos demonstrating that these cattle have been abused in Egyptian abattoirs. The Australian Livestock Exporters' Council was very horrified by this footage. Exports in Egypt have stopped in Egypt in 2006 because similar issues had happened. Also, exports to Indonesia have stopped because in 2011, they found footage of the same abuse.
These videos have not been shown to the public, but officials said that the videos of the cattle showed them being treated in a "vicious, cruel, and clumsy" way. The Animals Australis group is hoping that all exports on live organisms will stop. Spokeswoman Glenys Oogjes said "The way that these animals are treated are quite horrific. It is quite terrible and it shows systemic problems in these abattoirs for our animals. And how Australia ever sent animals back there after a suspension in 2006 is beyond us." She said that in one video, a cattle was shown falling off of the processing line. It was then chased through the abattoir, and the cattle had its legs cut off and was stabbed.
Alison Penfold, Chief of the Livestock Exporters Council was distressed by the actions shown in the videos and that they were "completely unacceptable to the industry and to Australians." She had told the BBC that the exports were committed to by an understanding between the governments of Australia and Egypt. She said that this industry was now investigating and was communicating with officials in Egypt to make sure of the welfare of animals. Australis's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry was "pleased with the level of co-operation" from officials in Egypt. Australia sends out over 700,000 cattle annually. The industry is worth A$1bn ($1.03bn) annually. Although many people are wanting all exports on live animals to stop.
The Agriculture Minister, Joe Ludwig was okay with the stopping of exports. The industry has a "bright future" but it needs to keep "animal welfare outcomes."
Analysis: The author of this article is not available, but I believe he/she wrote it to show the world about this stop on exports and the reason of. It also shows us that this ban may greatly effect Egypt in the future. The main idea of this article is that live cattle exports to Egypt have stopped due to animal cruelty, and this may stop all exports in the future. The audience is mainly for people in Egypt because it will affect them the most. There is no bias, just facts.
I am pleased with the decision to stop exports to Egypt. They had a very good reason to do so. It is also upsetting how Egypt treats cattle. I hate how it took so long for them to stop exports to Egypt. I don't know why Egypt would hurt these poor animals that are just trying to do their job. I mean, it shocks me that someone could be so cruel to animals for so many years and not get in trouble for it. If these abusive actions continue, I hope the exports stop for good.
