Saudi Arabia’s Government Sanctions Sports in Girls’ Private School Post by: Addison Norman

Saudi Arabia’s Government Sanctions Sports in Girls’ Private School
Post by: Addison Norman

In a country where women have little rights, things are beginning to turn. Now in Saudi Arabia women can’t vote, and they aren’t allowed to drive. Also, women can’t get an education, get married, or leave Saudi Arabia without the permission from a husband or father. Obviously, there isn’t much gender equality in the country, but lately that has slightly changed.  The government has recently authorized sports in girls’ private schools. It is required that when girls participate that they must dress modestly, have proper gear, and the right places to practice. Some believe that this will encourage private schools to begin sports programs. Not only are they now supporting physical education in girls’ private school, but also for the first time last summer Saudi Arabia let two girls participate in the London Olympics.
I think this is great that Saudi Arabia is taking steps, even though they are small, towards equality. I know living in America that there are equal rights between men and women. It is upsetting that there are still many countries where everyone isn’t equal. Reading this article I have been reminded of how fortunate we are to have our rights.

  1. These are small steps, but steps in the right direction! Women's rights in the Middle East have been covered by the media recently, and I believe the publicity is one of the reasons they are changing their laws. I'm really grateful for gender equality in America.
