HOng Kong vs. Usagi - by Amanda Maceda

All of Hong Kong is preparing themselves for the destructive waves of typhoon Usagi. This typhoon is now the strongest storm to hit the west pacific this year and the city has issued a number 8 signal warning. Over 80,000 people have escaped to the Fujian province, but on its coast 3 major power lines have already been destroyed, taking out power to 170,00 households. In addition, their flights have been cancelled, along with the Guangdong provinces flights. Farmers are also scrambling to harvest their mature crops before this storm damages their cash crops. Beginning in the Philippines, typhoon Usagi has already killed two people and triggered landslides. “If a No. 8 storm signal remains in place after 7 a.m. on Monday (7 p.m. EDT on Sunday), the Hong Kong stock exchange will be closed for at least part of the day, along with schools, businesses and non-essential government services.”
I love the idea that China is preparing for the worst to happen, because there is a chance it will. No matter what we humans do, we cannot control natural disasters such as these; we can only try to protect others and ourselves. Some people choose to evacuate, while others are probably hiding in the city. Some are making sure that their crops, or other goods they produce, are safety accounted for because that is how they make their income. I do not blame the farmers for doing this, because if they didn’t there would sure be no way for them to live after the storm if their way of supporting themselves went poof. I really hope went the typhoon hits no one will be killed. Source: http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/22/20638844-densely-populated-hong-kong-braces-against-powerful-typhoon

  1. I agree that I hope no one gets hurt and how great it is that people are already preparing. It must be hard to live in a places where natural disasters are so common, and those countries have hard jobs trying to prevent damage as much as possible while still trying to keep up with the rest if the world. I just hope that flights getting cancelled don't prevent anyone from leaving the country and being safe.

  2. Its really sucks to have hurricanes destroy everything and kill people. Unfortunately, hurricanes are out of our control. I have been in a a Hurricane before in 2008 when Hurricane Ike hit Texas. It knocked our power out and the area was caught in heavy rain even the trees were blowing hard. We had to pack our clothes and food we could carry and left for San Antonio for days. When we got back the power was still out and there were flood waters. I know how it feels for the people in Hong Kong. I'm just glad they are preparing.
