Yemen minister on child marriage: Enough is enough by Katelyn McLane

Young girls are getting married off to older men at much too young of an age in Yemen. There are no laws against this, but many people think that there ought to be. Girls as young as ten years old are getting married off or even sold to men as old as seventy. Some of these girls, like Rawan, the focus of the article, are even dying days after their marriage because of internal bleeding due to sexual intercourse. Some Yemenis are horrified and want the government to do something about these child marriages, but others think that a law would be "un-Islamic." Some local people are refusing to tell anyone about what they think happened out of fear. The father of Rawan even tried to pretend his daughter never even died by bringing in another little girl to talk to the government officials. News reporters are still unable to get a clear story of what happened, and have been unable to receive any comments from the young girl's father.

I find this story utterly horrifying. I didn't know that some countries were still marrying their young children off like that. It's abuse, and I strongly believe that it needs to be stopped. I hope that the Yemen government comes to their senses and finally creates a law that outlaws children getting married before the age of 18. It's hard to believe that people can be so ignorant and not realize that they're stealing these poor girls' innocence, childhood, and future from them by doing this. It's inhumane in my opinion, and I can't wait for more people to realize that and make a change.
