Ship Up-righted by: Hannah Kerman

The ship that tipped almost two years ago, was finally pulled from the reef earlier Monday morning. In January of 2012, thirty-two people died on the ship that tipped when it got too close to the sand bar. It took may engineers and lots of time to find a way to upright the ship. Finally, the engineers came to a conclusion that once the ship reached twenty four degrees, it would speed up the rotation if they filled tanks with the water that was on the boat. In total, the boat had to rotate sixty five degrees to become fully upright. The engineers predicted that it would take relatively 10 hours, but ended up taking 15 hours. The longest part of the operation was in the beginning because along with the enormous weight of the ship, they were also pulling the ship out of the water which means they were also lifting water. Once the ship reached the 24 degrees and they took the water out of the ship, it became much easier and quicker for the ship to finally upright itself.
This article is important because a ship so big has never been righted before. As a result, this shows what engineers can accomplish these days as technology gets better. Because technology is getting better, more and more people are adapting to the customs of the 20th century and are finding that technology just keeps getting smarter, faster, more reliable, and more updated.

  1. This is very cool! I agree that technology is impressive these days, and it's nice to know that people are still getting smarter and smarter so that they can continue to achieve things they haven't ever been able to achieve before.
