An Autopsy Has Been Completed on Rape Suspect in India By: Nina Bharadwaj

     The authorities in New Delhi, India has finally completed an autopsy of a man named Ram Singh. He was apparently, one of a group of men that have been accused and convicted of raping and nearly killing a women by beating her, on a local, New Delhi bus.

     The police and many other authorities have come to the conclusion that this man, Ram Singh, had hung himself. This all happened in a jail cell, in Tihar prison, on Monday. Although his parents and his lawyer have come to a contradictory conclusion. They all seem to say that this man was murdered. The details of this autopsy have not been released, and it is unclear of whether they will be released sooner or later.

     The father of Ram Singh, Mang Lai said "Ram Singh did not kill himself. He was murdered." He told this to the CNN affiliate, CNN-IBN, on Monday. The death of Ram Singh's death while in the custody of the prison has sparked very harsh criticism of India's prisons. The India Express newspaper wrote on Tuesday, in an editorial, "If prisons are to be considered rational institutions, rather than horrible holding pens, then prisoners' rights should be of utmost importance, and their protection the state's strongly held commitment."

    The country's National Crime Records Bureau, NCRB, says that India has had about 1,382 people in jail as of 2011. The jail has a total capacity to hold 332,782 citizens. Although, the rate of occupancy for these jails was near 112% in 2011. This was posted on the bureau website show. As of last year, 18 deaths were recorded. Two of the deaths were suicidal and self-inflicted. This was according to CNN-IBN.

     Officials as well as many other authorities have claimed that Ram Singh was the driver of the New Delhi bus in which many men harassed and sexually assaulted a 23-year old women on December 16.

     This gang rape, as well as this women's injuries, have caused many protests and complaints about how the country treats women and how to deal with harassment.

     Police charged Ram Singh as well as four other men with murder, kidnapping, and rape. The trial of this assault began in early February. If any of the several men are convicted, then they could possibly be sentenced to death. There is a sixth suspect, a seventeen year old, but he will be tried separately.

     This rape in December caused Indian citizens to want more strict laws including rape. Additionally, many women in India have complained about being harassed, according to the Indian Council on Global Relations.

There was no bias in this article because everything was just facts. There were quotes, but they were from both sides of the story.

I think that this is absolutely horrible that this happened. I feel so bad for this poor women. I had no idea that this happened often in India. I can understand why women are now wanting more strict laws regarding assault. I would want more strict laws. I also wonder why the parents of Ram Singh are saying that he was murdered. I wonder if they honestly think that or if they are just covering something secretive. Whatever the matter is, I hope the assault number goes down.
