At least 60 people in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, have died of alcohol poisoning. The victims died after drinking locally made alcohol. Alcohol sale and consumption is prohibited in Libya, but alcoholic drinks, including those that are locally made, are smuggled into the country. The symptoms (including breathing problems, blindness, coma, seizures, and death) indicate methanol poisoning. An investigation into the alcohol poisoning has been launched, and security has been increased to reduce smuggling.
This is a very detailed and informative article about what is believed to be one of the worst outbreaks of alcohol poisoning in Libya. It shows the risks involved with smuggled goods. I think the government responded appropriately to the issue, and hopefully they can prevent any more outbreaks.

Looks like the government was right to ban the unsafe alcohol in this case.
ReplyDeletewow! That's crazy! I didn't know that alcohol poisoning caused that many problems!
ReplyDeleteI also didn't know that alcohol poisoning caused so many problems. It is awful how people smuggle things into the country. They know that they are not supposed to do it, and they know the repercussions of it, yet they do it anyways. I am happy that security is being increased so that this will hopefully not happen again. I hope that these people have learned their lesson about smuggling goods because absolutely no good will come out of it. People will somehow end up suffering.
ReplyDeleteLooks like people paid the price for illegally smuggling in alcohol
ReplyDeleteI don;t think people realize how dangerous alcohol can be!
ReplyDeleteWow! And I bet people are going to keep on ingesting these crazy chemicals!
