Fire Kills Refugees in Thailand- Margaret Canady

In northwest Thailand, a fire at a refugee camp killed at least 32 and injured more than 100 refugees. The fire, which is being investigated, destroyed hundreds of shelters that were made from bamboo and banana leaves. It also destroyed a clinic and food center in the camp, found in the Mae Hong Son province.

Because of the fire, 2,300 refugees are now homeless. The Ban Mae Surin Refugee Camps house thousands of refugees from the country of Myanmar, who flee the guerrillas, government forces, and ethnic conflict associated with Thailand's neighboring country. Supplies to build emergency shelters for the homeless refugees are being brought in by the United Nations refugee agency in Thailand.

This is a very tragic thing to happen to the refugees from Myanmar. The country of Thailand is doing a great thing by building shelters for the refugees and allowing them to flee from ethnic conflict. Hopefully the refugee camp will carry firefighting equipment from now on.

More than 100 people were injured in the fire, which destroyed about 400 homes at the Mae Surin camp.

  1. This is so sad. I agree with you, I hope they take better precautions from now on.
