Floating Restaurant Sinks in Baghdad by Corsica Steding

A floating restaurant on the Tigris River sunk on February 28th in Iraq.  About 150 people were on the floating restaurant when it went down.  They were all invited there for a private party held by Caterpillar Incorporated.  Bilad Qusay said that he was sure that something was wrong when "patrons were asked to enter the restaurant one by one", and that he could also see water on the floor when he went inside.  What eventually happened was the water pressure broke the windows of the floating restaurant and one of the sides went down.  Only five bodies have been recovered from the waters, but some of the people were able to make it to shore safely.

Mohammad Tawfeeq and Moni Basu wrote this article on February 28th.  Before reading this article I hadn't heard of a floating restaurant.  This article was written to update people who might have heard about it, or are interested in what happened.  I think that the fact that this occurred is awful when the owner knew that the maximum capacity of the restaurant was 100 people.  Letting an extra 50 people in was a huge risk that he definitely should not have taken.

  1. That's really dangerous, because they obviously knew something was wrong before the guests got on the floating restaurant. Management shouldn't have jeopardized everyone's safety like that. Did anyone die or get injured?

  2. I doubt that anyone had made sure the boat was actually safe. Maybe this guy wanted to create a restaurant on water to improve his popularity or show off his wealth. whatever the reason, it cost the lives of many people.
