Standing Rock Protesters Keep Fighting

November 28th, 2016

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota has been joined by hundred of others to protesters against the completion of the pipeline that is currently underway. They've been fighting for months, with people from all over the country joining them in what was supposed to be a peaceful protest, which isn't the case anymore. Authorities have been making arrests for trespassing on pipeline property and even recent violence, when a woman was severely wounded by a small explosion. On December 5th, the main campsite for the tribe and its demonstrators, and any trespassers will be arrested on the spot. The letter sent by the Army Corps of Engineers this past Friday devastated the chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux people.

The nearly finished pipeline could cause major pollution in the area, particularly the Missouri River, being the tribe's main fresh water source. It's almost disrespectful that they were told their land would become private property so close to Thanksgiving, especially being a celebration of the exchange between Native Americans and the first pilgrims from Europe. I admire the tribe's courage and resilience as they continue to fight for their remaining land, and they haven't given up hope quite.
