Elle Holland Current Event #12

Thousands of people were sent to the hospital in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria in Australia last monday due to a freak illness known as thunderstorm asthma. The illness has now killed six people in Australia and three are in intensive care. Thunderstorm asthma occurs when a storm hits and their are high levels of pollen and humidity. This causes the grains to break up and disperse into peoples lungs making it very difficult for them to breathe. The disease is most commonly brought on by grass pollen but it can also come from excessive levels of tree pollen and fungal spores in the atmosphere. In Australia, an extra 60 ambulances have been deployed and the emergency phone lines are overflowing with calls, about one every four to five seconds.

This disease needs to be stopped and cured as soon as possible. It is good that Australia is on top of the cases and taking good care of those affected however the faster thunderstorm asthma can be terminated the less people will be hurt by it. I am so sorry for those who lost their lives due to this terrible illness but curing it and helping those who need it will be an advancement for medicine all over the world.

  2. That's crazy that a disease has been formed and is deadly by a thunderstorm. I hope they are able to find a cure for this because I sure don't want this to be like the next Ebola situation.
